The EDLL Story - our Founder, John Krizman
Our founder, John Krizman, has a rich history in the restaurant and bar industry that is deeply rooted in family tradition and community service. His journey began under the guidance of his father, Don Krizman, a well-respected local restaurant and bar owner who opened The Blue Spruce in 1972 at the corner of 306 & Tyler Blvd in Mentor, OH. This establishment laid the foundation for the family’s longstanding presence in the industry. After John graduated from college in 1984, the family business underwent a significant transformation, evolving into Prime Time Bar & Grill, a venture that continued under the Krizman family’s stewardship until 1997. Despite selling the business and retiring, Don Krizman remains a vibrant part of the community at 88 years old, often accompanying John on visits to current and prospective EDLL member establishments, highlighting their commitment to local businesses.
Beyond the family enterprise, John’s professional path was shaped by over 30 years of experience with national chains, including roles at TGI Fridays, The Cooker, Caribou Coffee, Champps, and Quaker Steak and Lube. These positions allowed him to gain a broader understanding of the restaurant and bar industry, complementing the knowledge he inherited from his family’s business. John’s career with these companies equipped him with a wealth of management and operational insights, some of which he shared with his father in the 1990s, demonstrating a reverse mentorship that enriched their family business.
Today, John’s vision for EDLL is deeply influenced by his extensive industry background and his commitment to supporting local, independently owned restaurants and bars. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by these establishments, he is dedicated to fostering a community where local businesses can thrive. His mission to “Keep our Cash in the Community” reflects a full-circle moment in his career, connecting his current endeavors back to his roots in the family business.
